KPJAYI NEWSLETTER: JANUARY 2009

Happy New Year! As we usher in 2009, we proudly introduce some exciting changes at the K Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute. This is the first of a quarterly newsletter designed to keep the greater Ashtanga community informed with news from our Mysore shala.

Our school name has formally changed to K Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute to distinguish Guruji’s method from any other yoga labeled “Ashtanga.” Our website has also been renamed and refined. Please now consider http://www.kpjayi.org the official website of Pattabhi Jois’s teachings, and for the definitive listing of all certified and authorized teachers from the institute. We will continue to enhance the site over the next year; initial improvements include new Mysore practice and teaching requirements (see below).

NOTE FROM THE FAMILY
Though he is no longer formally teaching, Guruji, at 93, is feeling fine. Sharath is now in charge of classes at KPJAYI in Mysore, India, and is assisted by his mother Saraswathi, Pattabhi Jois’s daughter, who also runs a late-morning session for beginners.

As a result of the vast number of students now coming to Mysore, we have refined our requirements for enrollment, which include a new application. This application [www.kpjayi.org/practice] must be received by KPJAYI at least 60 days prior to arrival in order to be considered for admission. Your application will not be accepted if received after the 60-day cut-off period. The criteria for teaching authorization have also recently been fine-tuned [www.kpjayi.org/teachers].

SHRI K PATTABHI JOIS CHARITABLE TRUST
This registered trust was set up in honor of Guruji’s 90th birthday to improve the lives of economically disadvantaged families and children, undeserved communities and the environment.

As a vehicle for sending news of recent conference topics, student field trips and KPJ Charitable Trust events, the Shri K Pattabhi Jois Charitable Trust is developing its own mailing list. To sign up and to learn how you can contribute your time and other resources to worthy charitable causes in Mysore, please visit http://www.kpjtrust.org

REFLECTION
“If you only read books, you only have book knowledge. You have to have practical experience by practicing the yamas and niyamas, and asana in the correct method, with correct breathing and correct gazing, in your daily life. This is how you realize the meaning of yoga—how you realize who you are.” — R. Sharath
