Richard Freeman Bio:
Richard Freeman has been a student of yoga since 1968. He has spent nearly nine years in Asia studying various traditions which he incorporates into the Ashtanga yoga practice as taught by his principal teacher, K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. Richard’s background also includes studying Sufism in Iran, Zen and Vipassana Buddhist practice, and an in-depth study of Iyengar yoga, which eventually led him to Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. Richard is an avid student of both Western and Eastern philosophy, as well as Sanskrit. His ability to juxtapose various viewpoints, without losing the depth and integrity of each, has helped him develop a unique, metaphorical teaching style. He is the owner of The Yoga Workshop in Boulder, Colorado and the author of the forthcoming book, “The Mirror of Yoga” (Shambhala Publications).

Field Trip: Genny Kapuler

For anyone interested in Iyengar-style yoga, or really just great yoga instruction in general, the name Genny Kapuler is likely to be familiar.

In the event it isn’t… rush over to one of her classes this instant!

I decided to spend my Friday morning in one of the classes she teaches out of her large loft space in Soho.  I left myself plenty of time to make sure I found the space (it’s easy to find).  But I forgot that my wallet was empty of cash which meant finding a bank machine (I think Genny’s studio is probably the only business left in Soho that doesn’t accept credit cards).  This task proved less simple than I had imagined.  In fact the lead time I had left myself evaporated in a wash of frustration.  J. Crew: check.  Boutiques galore: check. Starbucks: check.  Everything you could buy but no ATM.  (JIC you find yourself in my position, try the delis on Prince Street, just west of West Broadway).

I finally made it with cash in hand to the building on the corner of Wooster and Houston Street. Here’s another tip for first timers: take the stairs, even though it’s a 5th floor walk-up.  Anyway, even though I was kind of late, Genny was accommodating.  Clothes and shoes were strewn about the living quarters of the giant loft.  The studio section is large enough to hold many students practicing, yet it has a homey feel that clearly sets it apart from a regular studio.

Class was fantastic of course.  Genny’s experience shines through in all her decisions, and her knowledge and passion for the anatomy are the underlying thrust of her teaching style.  I was moved by her clear and powerful voice, and brilliant directives.  The few hands on adjustments I received were clear and displayed the economy of motion that only experience can bring.  Needless to say, glancing around the crowded room I caught the faces of many of my teachers. It’s so inspiring how to see how after so many years, great teachers and practitioners like Genny keep finding more.

I exited into the rainy morning, feeling amazing.  How could this be the same guy who was cursing on the street a couple of hours earlier?

THE GREAT DEBATE UPDATE

Back in August we leaked the news about the Great Debate between the meat-eating Sadie Nardini and the veggie-loving Sharon Gannon. After a delay in plans, our sources now tell us that theses yoginis will take their corners on October 8th at 12 noon (EDT) via The Huffington Post. More details to follow soon…

Back-to-(Yoga) School

This September, Boomerang Yoga, a non-profit organization geared towards raising mullah for children, is hosting a Sun Salute-a-thon, 108 sun salutations over a 3-hour asana, with the concept of sponsored mats for participating yogis. Stephanie Culen, the founder and executive director of the organization is hoping to raise $500 per mat.  All donations made will go to the continuation of Bent on Learning, an ah-mazing non-profit who has been the forerunner in getting yoga classes into NYC’s public school curriculum.

The event will be held on Sunday, September 20th from 3-6pm at NYC’s SoHo Equinox, visit the Boomerang Yoga Events page to learn how you can participate yourself.  (Attendees are also said to get some goodies for showing up too!)

Or if you prefer, freebean is offering to be your surrogate yogini on that mat day – so donate here – a little or lot – all is much appreciated.

NYC Yoga Conferences: Splurge vs. Steal

by freebean

Like many ‘yoga’ categories these days, there are now a wide range of conferences (and price tags), luckily there are some a la carte options so that you can enjoy a little taste of everything.

The Splurge: This year is the first Yoga Journal Conference to hit NYC (May 15-May 18).  While some big wigs in the yoga world fill the schedule,  it is still rather spendy for most yogis (it could very well be the whole piggybank), however it is still cheaper than traveling to another city if you are a New York yogi.

Here are some worthy freebean-recommended happenings:

The Steal: After a weekend of YJC splurging, your wallet and asana will craving the low-budget yoga fix  NY Yoga & Raw Food Expo (May 29-May 31) promises to offer.  For a mere $20/day ($15 in advance) or just $35 for all 3 days ($30 in advance) you get full access to the expo and more!  Here are some of the highlights:

  • Swami Bua, America’s oldest living yogi (he’s supposedly 120 years old) makes a guest appearance (Does he really exist?  Check it out for yourself.)
  • FREE unlimited yoga classes and wellness lectures!
  • Raw cuisine by Kwatamani, the top Floridian (as in ‘from Florida’) raw food chef.
  • 50% off all books at the Expo’s New Age Bookstore.

Please share your findings if you attend – the good, the okay, the uplifting and even the not-so-good!
