NYC Event: Rengade Craft Fair

Always too much to spend your money on.

Always too inspiring.

Always worth going to!

Thank jelly they are holding this year’s Renegade Craft Fair in McCarren Park instead of the pool.  Grass, trees, and fly balls…

How you should spend your money: local, custom, & crazy awesome (part 1?)

posted by ebeans

Because if you have to buy something, it should make you feel good in a well-rounded “ethical consumer” I-am-saving-the-world-in-my-own-little-way kind of way. Plus, these girl companies are run by totally chill ladies…  Let’s shop!

from knickers and no fur coat

Knickers and no fur coat
Big boobies/bottoms, small and all sizes between, Jana Kennedy’s creations for the bedroom or beach rock both on the rack and on your curves.  You can buy her crazy awesome knickers and bikinis online, or go local and head out to Brooklyn’s McCarren Park to purchase in person.  It gets better…She’ll also make custom sets!  You pick the color, design, etc, she makes you look and feel frilly fabulous.

If I see one more matching lycra yoga set I might puke.  What is “performance wear” anyway?  Will the right shirt make you float into handstand.  No.  Will the right pants?  No.  Well, maybe…  If your pants are crazy awesome brightly colored organic pantsplosions, you might be in such a good mood that maybe you’ll “stop fearing” and start doing.  These cozy cotton pants run a bit long and a lot cozy.  They’ve got a fold over waist with a thick band which is just the only way to go (especially when it folds over to lime green).  Plus, they can be bought locally here in NY at the Yoga Journal Conference and possibly at your local yoga studio. Sometimes they do custom dyes too…

Who wears short shorts?

[updated 6/26/10]

trainingScroll about halfway down:

“WHAT TO WEAR: Tight-fitting shorts and a sleeveless top. You will not be allowed to take the exam without proper attire.”

Are they going Iyengar?  Do they want to see anatomy?  Do they want to make jumping to bakasana on sweaty arms that more challenging?  Or maybe they just want to see more legs?  Who doesn’t?…

So, what to wear?  If you like roll-down pants, try Hard Tail’s roll-down shorts.  Same thick material (won’t show your booty), same stretchy material (won’t show your booty), same roll-down (you will love).  The pair on the left looks a bit short…if you want longer, try the east-coast version.  For a list of stores click here.

Phat Buddha is a NYC based yoga clothing company that makes high quality, yet affordable wear.  Everything is that stretchy swimsuit material in vibrant colors and patterns.  Try the drawstring shorts.  For a little extra length, go east-coast.  The material is clingy, yet flexible, and thick, yet lightweight.  You’ll find Phat Buddha in many Bikram studios in NYC.

Prana, perhaps the most ethical of the bunch, makes the simple “Eve Shorts”.  I’ve never tried them, but they look pretty straight forward…Hey Prana, send us a pair and we’ll try ’em out!

Got a pair that you swear by?  Let us know!

Update 6/26/10: We’re still waiting to try a pair of the Prana shorts and really dig this Iyengar bloomer company:  Malaika Padma (especially their Puna Chic Yoga Shorts).   American Apparel is currently stocking their version (the Pique Bloomer), albeit probably not exclusively for yoga so who knows how functional they are on the mat.
