Lessons from the road: The secret to maintaining a long distance relationship

posted by ebean

The secret to maintaining a long distance relationship is contact.  But what do you do if you can’t be physically present (I mean, it is long-distance…)?  You have to be really creative.

1.  Send real mail. A letter.  An envelope with random stuff.  A box with random stuff.  It gives them something to touch and hold.  It makes you real.  Mix CDs are good to include.  But anything works really.  Don’t send sexy stuff (that just makes things tricky).

2.  Skype like crazy. It is free.  Try to make sure you are not in a public space so you can get more intimate but public is okay too as long it isn’t every time you Skype.

3.  Email. Try to vary the lengths.  Include pictures, music, whatever else you can find.

Things that tugged my heart strings…

Billy Bragg & Wilco “California Stars”

Bat For Lashes “Whats a Girl To Do”

The Year of John Entwistle

  • The OX year is a conservative year, one of traditions and values. This is not a year to be outrageous. A slow but steady year.
  • This OX year will bring stability and growth where patience and diligence pays off.
  • This is a year of Harvest – when we reap what we have sown. Take care of business this year, do not let things slide.

Iggy Pop: Open Up and Bleed

Iggy's on-stage drop backs

Recently read Paul Trynka’s Iggy Pop: Open Up and Bleed.  It read like an E! True Hollywood Story script — in a good way.  I didn’t really know that much about Iggy Pop, his influence on music, performing, or his strong connections with David Bowie and The White Stripes.  Despite the many references to his eh-hmm endowment, a friend in the know informed me that it isn’t that impressive.  Sorry.

Fact:  Iggy Pop has followed a macrobiotic diet.

Fact:  Iggy’s dance and yoga-like stretching inspired Gerard Malanga’s infamous nudie photo.

Fact: Kurt Cobain said that “Raw Power” was one of his favorite albums ever.

Fact: David Bowie snorted an obscene amount of cocaine.

Fact:  Iggy, in line with a ridiculously high number of rock stars (or whatever), has/had a penchant for underage girls.

But still…

2009 Oscar Nomination Commentary with Nevermind

Ebean sits down with speedcore musician Nevermind to discuss the Oscar nominees and the upcoming release of two new albums.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
EB (Ebeans)-  Worst movie ever!  Actually slept through parts hoping to wake up to it being over.
N (Nevermind)- Wanted to see it and thought it was a good idea.  Probably too long to watch in a theatre though.

EB-  Haven’t seen it but it looks interesting.
N-  Haven’t seen it yet.

EB-  I want to see it.
N-  I haven’t seen most of this shit.

The Reader
EB-  Nope.
N-  *Blank stare*

Slumdog Millionaire
EB-  I saw it.  It was really good.
N-  *Leaves the room*.

Richard Jenkins – The Visitor
EB-Haven’t seen it.
N-Me neither.

Frank Langella – Frost/Nixon
Sean Penn – Milk
Brad Pitt – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Mickey Rourke – The Wrestler
EB-Haven’t seen it.
N-Heard it was good.

Anne Hathaway – Rachel Getting Married
Angelina Jolie – Changeling
EB- I saw it, but have nothing to compare it to.

Melissa Leo – Frozen River
Meryl Streep – Doubt
Kate Winslet – The Reader

Josh Brolin – Milk
Robert Downey Jr. – Tropic Thunder
EB-  That was so hilarious!
N-Kind of funny. “I know who I am. I’m a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude.”
EB-That Curious Case crap was like Tropic Thunder’s “Simple Jack”.

Philip Seymour Hoffman – Doubt
Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight

EB- He was really great in this movie.
N-  He was good.  He’s gonna win.  That movie would have sucked if he wasn’t in it.
EB-  True.

Michael Shannon – Revolutionary Road

Amy Adams – Doubt
Penelope Cruz – Vicky Cristina Barcelona
EB-I really liked this movie…but maybe it isn’t really for guys.

Viola Davis – Doubt
Taraji P. Henson – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Marisa Tomei – The Wrestler

David Fincher
Ron Howard
Gus Van Sant
Stephen Daldry
Danny Boyle

N-  I only want to watch something that’s going to entertain me.

Courtney Hunt – Frozen River
Mike Leigh – Happy-Go-Lucky
Martin – In Bruges
Dustin Lance Black – Milk
Andrew Stanton – WALL-E

EB-  They do the same shit over and over again.
N-  That’s all they ever do.  I like watching cartoons on dvd.  What pisses me off is they bleep out the swears on dvd.  Why don’t they unbleep them?

Kung Fun Panda

N-  I want to see it.  I was told to watch it.

Between bites of pastina pasta, Nevermind tells me he has two records coming out.  The first is on his own label, Apocalypse Recordings.  It is just called “Nevermind”.  The other is a compilation with U.S. artists on a Swiss label called TNI.  The album will release at about the same time as the other and will be called “Valkyrie’s Vigil“.
